Mudflat hiking to Neuwerk
Neuwerk Island is first mentioned in the year 900, referred to as O or Oog ( meaning “island” ) in connection with the fish trade. To protect the merchant ships entering the Elbe estuary from piracy, a defensive tower was built between 1299 and 1310, a “Nige Wark,” literally a “new work.” This gave the island its name. It belongs to the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park and is the westernmost “district” of Hamburg.
Depending on the tide, water levels, and weather, we plan these hikes either from Sahlenburg ( 9.4 km ) or from Duhnen ( 12.2 km ) to the island. The route includes crossing tidal creeks (Priele) and a mudflat‑waterway. The hike takes about 3 hours from Sahlenburg and roughly 3.5 hours from Duhnen. The passenger ferry "Flipper" will take you back to Cuxhaven
What goes there can also come back. In the morning we depart from Cuxhaven with you aboard the Flipper heading to Neuwerk Island. A tasty breakfast awaits you on board. In the afternoon we hike back to the mainland, ending at Sahlenburg.
On the island you can visit the old fort tower and the amber‑room, have a Neuwerk T‑shirt printed at the former school, admire the beautiful salt marshes and bird nesting sites, enjoy food and drink at Hus Achtern Diek, Nige Hus, or the Fishermen’s taverns, or simply relax and let your mind wander during an island tour. Participation in these mudflat walks is not possible for children under 8 years old ( NWattFVO ). The mudflat walk starts in Sahlenburg or Duhnen.

Flip-flops, Crocs, and beach shoes are completely unsuitable, as are rubber boots, which aren't high enough for crossing the tidal creeks and will fill with water.
